MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Each day I leave my job in the criminal justice field feeling frustrated. Watching scores of urban youth rounded up like cattle and prodded toward the podium to offer their plea of guilty or not guilty. Watching as they are escorted back and forth to jail cells, shuffling in chains. I have taken the time to talk to these young people and have learned that many of them are locked up, not just because they made poor choices, but also because they lacked the guidance, values, and support that have saved many of us who grew up in urban areas from a similar fate.
Most of these young people also have in common poor academic performance, increased high school drop-out rates, poverty, no outlet for creative expression in a learning environment, and no positive role models, particularly male role models.
I founded Abraham’s Promise, Inc. to provide programs to address these desperate needs. Abraham’s Promise’ mission is to help youth remove the obstacles on their road to high school graduation, college, and employment. We achieve this goal by providing a comprehensive program which features sports training, nutritious meals, intensive math tutoring and testing, innovative math tutoring methods, such as a math board game which we created, life skills training and mentors, and arts education, including public speaking, to provide an outlet for creative expression in a learning environment.
